The American Foundation Building Wins Orchid Award
PHOENIX, Arizona - The American Foundation was honored with an Orchid Award for the eye-pleasing design of its headquarters building located at 4518 N. 32nd Street in Phoenix. Candidates for the sixth annual Orchid and Onion "Owards," sponsored by The Business Journal, are nominated by the public and voted on by a panel of ten judges, composed of representatives from the contest's sponsors-principally construction, design and landscape industries-and local citizens. Residents used ballots published in The Business Journal or voted online through the contest's Web site. The results were announced at a November 3 breakfast at the Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak Resort and published in the November 3 issue of The Business Journal.
The 12,000 square foot, two-story building, erected in January 1999, was designed to replicate an 18th century colonial Mexico villa, and contains many custom details such as Atikeen stone from Mexico, Brazilian walnut flooring and handcrafted wrought iron throughout (including a massive chandelier in the two-story-tall lobby). The bathroom walls are of tumbled marble, the sinks are Travertine marble and the floor is Mexican Noche. The lobby walls were hand painted with a crackled, old plaster faux finish in four layers.
"This building allows us to host charitable events in an atmosphere that creates a warm feeling of solid well-being, just as a family foundation does" says Ben L. Schaub, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the American Foundation.
